The Information Systems Institute (IWi) at the University of Leipzig combines education and research in the domains of business application systems, information management and software development. Three professors with 25 employees cover these areas and offer a dedicated bachelor and master degree in business information systems. The Institute’s research focuses on application systems in the service industries, in particular product lines and service-oriented application architectures in logistics, banking and software engineering.

The area of Application Systems in Business and Administration (Professor Rainer Alt) emphasizes the technological fundamentals of application systems, in particular technological concepts such as service-oriented architectures and open source technologies especially in the areas of customer relationship and supply chain management. Decision support systems used in an interorganizational setting such as business intelligence systems are also within scope. Among the externally funded projects is the competence center ‘Sourcing in the finance industry’, a joint project with the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland.

The Institute’s two other professorships are Information Management (Professor Bogdan Franczyk) and Software Development for Business and Administration (Professor Eisenecker) supplemented by a Computing Center (Dr. Wilfried Röder).
